After hiking up to a cave in Matobo National Park, our guide pointed out cave paintings left by the Bushmen, a people who were pushed out of their traditional lands hundreds of years ago. This recording is of him speaking inside the cave, explaining his understanding of Bushmen culture and...anatomy? This recording is totally unedited and uncut.
While on a three day canoe trip down the Lower Zambezi river, our guide told us stories around the evening campfire, interrupted at one point by a phone call from his girlfriend.
Locals perform on the shores of Lake Malawi in the village of Senga Bay, Malawi.
During a tour of South Pole Overland Traverse, I got the chance to operate a big red tractor. These tractors are used to haul a caravan of living modules and fuel bladders 1,000 miles from McMurdo Station to South Pole Station, crossing massive ice sheets and the TransAntarctic mountain range.
The southernmost rookery of Aledie Penguins is on a little outcropping of rock in the Ross Sea called Cape Royds. It was named by Ernest Shackelton, who spent the winter there during the British Antarctic Expedition in 1908. The hut built by him and his crew still stands across a small pond from the rookery. The penguins' territory is an Antarctic Specially Protected Area, so the sounds and smells can only be experienced from a distance.
Sounds of traffic on the street in Hanoi.
Audio from the Thang Long Water Puppet Show in Hanoi.
Listening to the sounds of the audience at Thang Long Water Puppet Theater before the show.
Howler monkeys at National Kandawgyi Botanical Gardens in Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar (Burma).
Sounds of the street market in Kalaw. I think the man singing on the loudspeaker was affiliated with some political party, but that's just a guess.
Loud insects and distant bird calls in the oldest rainforest on earth.
Balinese gamelan performance. Gamelan is an ensemble of musicians playing percussion instruments, including metallophones and hand drums. Gamelan is traditional in Java, Bali and some other parts of Indonesia, and has been featured by groups as hip as Sonic Youth and Xiu Xiu. Sounds like a Four Tet song, if you ask me.
Audio from a performance of traditional Kacek dance at Uluwatu Temple, Bali.
The rice paddies in Bali come to life after dark.
I was recording the calls of topical birds on these beautiful little islands off the east coast of Malaysia when I stumbled upon an enormous monitor lizard. You can hear it at around 02:30.
The city of Medan is a noisy place. I recorded this from a small balcony above the street. Among the sounds of traffic, you can hear the midday call to prayer being amplified from a nearby mosque.
I was taking an evening stroll around the streets of Tuk Tuk, on the shores of Lake Toba, Sumatra, when I came upon a group of eight or ten men with guitars. They were happily singing local songs and drinking local palm wine, called tuak, which is a thick opaque alcoholic beverage that smells like rotten eggs (to me, anyway). They were so engaged in their singing, I don't know if they ever noticed me.
The sounds of the swamp during a summer shower.
